Program Description

"On the Right Track with APRS"

by Kevin Walsh

APRS (Automated Packet/Position Reporting System) is an amateur radio-based method of automatically reporting your GPS-derived position and altitude, along with other information.  After passing a simple written exam for your amateur radio Technician license you can use a transmitter in your plane and track your position real-time over the internet, or go back and retrieve past flights.  You can even "fly" along with planes in the air on Google Earth.  An overview of the test requirements, equipment required, and demonstrations of tracking ability will be included.

"My Plane Loves Me"

By Burrall Sanders

Burrall will lead a  discussion about attitudes for safe flying and building. A focus on the challenges builders and flyers encounter as builders, owners or pilots of EZ type planes. There will be some discussion regarding the utility and efficiency of our Canard planes, including many rewarding experiences that I and others have enjoyed. The talk will be supported by many photos and graphics.

"T1B Program - SpaceShip 2 / WhiteKnight 2"

By Marc Zeitlin

The Next Exciting Step in Airline Travel!

Marc is going to give an update on the SpaceShip 2 project. As an engineer working for Scaled Composites, the presentation will necessarily be a summary of information which is publicly available. Using his unique engineering talents, he'll be able to give a perspective on the project as only Marc can! This will be a very interesting and informative presentation on the current challenges facing the adventure of creating a sub-orbital space system capable of regularly scheduled passenger service for the general public.

Presenter's Biographies

A little about Kevin Walsh:

Kevin Walsh has 15 years of experience in industrial automation, data-acquisition and process control.  At his day job he works as a pharmaceutical process development  engineer, focused on spray-driers and dry-powder inhalers.  Having recently passed his amateur radio Technician exam, he's just starting to see the possibilities for APRS in our Experimental aircraft.

Kevin holds a private-pilot license with an instrument rating, and is finishing work on a Cozy Mk-IV with Michael Antares.

A little about Burrall Sanders:

Burrall has built three aircraft for personal use, a Quickie, Vari-EZ and a modified Cozy IIIx. Burrall has over 2,000 flight hours in his homebuilt aircraft.

In 2003, Burrall founded Freeflight Composites, LLc and currently employs two full time and two part time employees.  The company has the know how to help the builder get a handle on the project's technical aspects and re-vitalize the vision that is so important to the successful outcome of a project.

Burrall is both a EAA Technical advisor and a EAA Flight advisor.

A little about Marc Zeitlin:

Marc works on cutting edge (and some not-so-cutting edge) aeronautical engineering projects under Burt Rutan, and contributes to the continuing effort to bring space travel to the masses.

He has responsibility for the rocket motor development for the Spaceship 2 program.

Marc has built two experimental aircraft and is a licensed A & P mechanic.
