Program Description

A Chat with the FAA

By Cynthia Wells

A discussion on how the airspace system really works and services the FAA can provide. Topics will include:

Time has been allowed for an extensive question and answer session. Please bring any questions you may have regarding the above topics.

"Efficient Pusher Engine Cooling and Drag Reduction"

By Gary Hertzler

Would you like to improve your engine reliability and increase the speed of your canard aircraft? This seminar will give you the background to do both by decreasing your engine temperature and decreasing the drag on your aircraft.

Discussed will be techniques for evaluating your aircraft for cooling problems with proposed solutions siting the advantages and disadvantages of each. Several areas of high payoff drag reduction will be covered with expected performance improvement estimates.

"What it took to set the world's altitude record in a Long-EZ"

By Jim Price

The presentation will go into detail on the program development for setting two World Altitude Records with a Long-EZ (35,027 feet (10,676 meters)). Although many enhancements led to the flight's success, two were the most significant:

Since the development of Vortex Generators for the Long-EZ was crucial for the success of the venture, Jim will include a summary of why vortex generators were crucial and the testing and development of them for the flight.

"Silver Bullet Propeller Design and Construction"

By Gary Hertzler

Hertzler Propeller, Inc was started following retirement from a career of turbofan design and project experience. Using this background, a propeller design process was developed and will be discussed. Details into the manufacture of the propellers, the equipment and materials will be covered as well as performance and vibration testing.

Presenter's Biographies

A little about Gary Hertzler:

Gary has spent his career as a mechanical engineer working in the turbofan design industry for 30 years. He built a VariEze in 1980 and has accumulated over 3400 hours.

Gary holds three world's records in his VariEze for non-refueled distance and flight efficiency.

He has formed his own propeller business specializing in high efficiency composite covered propellers for the homebuilt industry. His Silver Bullet propeller is world renown as being one of the fastest propellers for canard aircraft.

A little about Jim Price:

Jim is a retired automotive engineer. He has worked in electrical & mechanical engineering as well as quality control. He has also done stints of assistant teaching at MIT (Mechanical Engineering cap-stone course) and University of Michigan Aeronautical Space Engineering. Jim is also an EAA Technical Advisor.

A little about Cynthia Wells:

Cynthia has been an air traffic controller since 1979.  She has worked as a certifed tower controller at King Salmon and Anchorage air traffic control towers (ATCT) in Alaska, Deer Valley ATCT in Arizona, and Stocton ATCT in California.  She has been a certified radar controller at Northern California Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON).  She has 17 years of supervisory and management experience and recently vacated her position as the air traffic manager at Stockton ATCT.  She is currently a staff support supervisor in the training department at Northern California TRACON which is responsible for training approximately 200 air traffic personnel.  She has worked many air shows, fire towers, fly-ins (worked Columbia Father's Day fly-in about 8 years in a row).  Lives in Ripon, California with her husband and 2 children.
